El encuentro, a puerta cerrada y calificado por ella como \u201cexcelente\u201d, se da en el marco de la reanudaci\u00f3n de relaciones diplom\u00e1ticas entre ambos pa\u00edses, luego de que la administraci\u00f3n de Donald Trump y el Gobierno de Delcy Rodr\u00edguez \u2014a quien Trump reconoce como jefa de Estado \u2014 restablecieran v\u00ednculos rotos desde 2019. Machado, quien sali\u00f3 de Venezuela en diciembre para recibir el Nobel de la Paz en Noruega, afirm\u00f3 en redes sociales: \u201cExcelente reuni\u00f3n con Marco Rubio. Gracias por su compromiso con la democracia, la libertad y el bienestar de los venezolanos\u201d. Su equipo destac\u00f3 que se abord\u00f3 una transici\u00f3n hacia elecciones y que su regreso al pa\u00eds ser\u00e1 pronto. El restablecimiento de relaciones incluy\u00f3 la reapertura de la Embajada de EE.UU. en Caracas.
